Gems are like custom versions of Gemini you can use for specific tasks. You provide a set of instructions which are remembered in the background, and then you can come back to the Gem to complete the task without needing to provide any context.
They can be really helpful for tasks that might usually require prior knowledge (e.g. the tone of voice of your brand, policies or procedures, or just certain steps to follow).
For example, a retail business could create a Gem which knows its brand tone of voice and has been given instructions which include delivery and returns policies. The Gem could then quickly draft responses to customer questions and refund requests.
Watch my quick video here for a walkthrough on how to create your first Gem.
Now share them with your team
The big downfall with Gems was that they were unique to your account. So if you created something that’d be helpful for your whole team to use, they’d have to go and recreate the Gem themselves.
Now, you can simply share the Gem from inside Gemini. Here’s how:
- In Gemini, click ‘Explore Gems’ in the menu
- Click the share icon on the Gem you’d like to share

- Add your coworker’s email address
- Decide on their permission level
(‘Viewer’ allows them to use the Gem themselves, ‘Editor’ allows them to make changes to the instructions that update for everyone it’s shared with.)

Shared Gems should appear at the bottom of your list of custom Gems. You can edit them from there. However, it seems that you might need to open and use the Gem first before it shows up there. Hopefully that’ll get ironed out as the sharing feature gets rolled out to everyone.
I’d love to hear how you’re utilising Gems! Tap the comment button below and share your use-case to inspire others.
I’ll be back in a week with the next one.
